Internet via satellite arrives in Vietnam

Internet via satellite arrives in Vietnam

A new Internet service is now available in Vietnam bringing users broadband access anywhere and anytime without being tied to a physical connection.

It comes in the form of a small satellite terminal which accesses the internet via the Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN).

Norwegian communications, IT, and media company Telenor and its partner Immarsat have tied up with the Vietnam Maritime Communications and Electronics Company (Vishipel) to bring the country’s first BGAN service.

Weighing just a kilogram and not much bigger than a laptop – it fits into a carry bag –the satellite terminal provides broadband connection of up to 512kbps.

Vishipel will be the local service provider but no further information is available.

At a press briefing in Hanoi earlier this month, Rodolfo Ramizer, Telenor’s regional manager, said Inmarsat had launched two commercial communications satellites and planned a third at the end of this year.

Based on the rapid telecoms growth in Asia, Telenor believed it could sell more than 1,000 terminals in the region, he said.

Vietnam is one of Telenor’s 10 key markets in Asia and it expects to sell 100 satellite terminals this year.

The company also plans to bring other hi-tech products, like satellite phones, to Vietnam in the near future.
